Weaverville Community Forest: Weaving Our Nature & Community
Who we are: The Weaverville Community Forest, a collaborative effort involving the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), United States Forest Service (USFS), and Trinity County Resource Conservation District (TCRCD), manages 14,963 acres of federal lands in Trinity County, California. This innovative Forest Stewardship model facilitates local engagement in federal land management, aligning community needs with federal objectives.
Activities within the forest include trail usage, firewood sales, fuels reduction, forest thinning, and logging, all aimed at enhancing visual quality, fire resilience, and overall forest health. The TCRCD, in partnership with BLM and USFS, strategically implements plans to achieve these goals, transitioning from a traditional timber-based economy to a multi-use, community-driven approach. The community forest sustains jobs, provides timber for the local mill, and preserves educational and historical significance, fostering a balance between economic and environmental considerations.
The partnership utilizes Stewardship Contracting, established in 2003, attracting national attention for its innovative approach to conceptual forest stewardship. As a model watched closely in Washington DC and beyond, the Weaverville Community Forest aims to expand opportunities by increasing community involvement and strengthening the bond between the land and its people.
The Weaverville Community Forest is home to both the Trinity Children’s Forest and the Weaver Basin Trail System.
